Description 

    In this library skills unit, students will learn about the Dewey Decimal system of organization, and how to use library reference materials such as almanacs, atlases, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.   The purpose of this unit is to  equip students with the library skills and knowledge necessary to be able to effectively use these skills to conduct research.  

    The library skills unit is divided into eight modules of instruction, each covering  a different library skill.   In addition to the eight modules of instruction, the culminating activity is a webquest where students are involved in researching information about Louisiana.  
     

Location and Time of the Class 
    Although this class is a distance learning unit and most of the work will be completed at a time and place of your choosing, you will need to contact the instructor to set up an appointment to complete the final activity, the Research Webquest, in the FSHS library.

Expectations of the Students 
  • Complete the library skills unit by reading and completing the information contained in each module. 
  • Complete all modules within the designated period of time. 
  • Schedule an appointment with the instructor to complete the Research Webquest. 
  • To facilitate the communication process, you must have an e-mail address.  At the beginning of class, e-mail the instructor with your current e-mail address. 
Assessment Criteria 
  1. The student will be expectd to complete the distance learning modules and activities.  On-line quizzes check for understanding of library skills terminology and concepts.  (100 pts)
  2. The student will be expected to complete the  Research Webquest and develop a research paper using appropriate library skills. (200 pts)
